Pregnancy Week 4 - 5

Pregnancy Week 4

As soon as the zygote reaches the uterine cavity, it will immediately implant into the wall of the uterus. During this period, some pregnant women might feel few cramps and notice few spots of blood.

Breast tenderness is a common finding and the volume of blood will increase. This extra blood will stimulate the kidney to work more in order to get rid of it and this is why you might experience a tendency to increase your visits to the bathroom. The heart is also overloaded with this extra blood volume and you will feel some fatigue which can also be explained by hormonal changes occurring in your body.

The cells of the developing embryo will be arranged in a specific way forming three different layers. These layers will form different body parts. The outer layer will develop into skin, tooth enamel and others. The middle layer will form your baby's circulatory system, kidneys and muscle tissue. The innermost layer will form the liver, pancreas and ear canal. Rest of body organs will also develop from these three layers.

Relying on some symptoms that develop during this week of pregnancy, some Mums will perform a pregnancy test to confirm or exclude pregnancy. If your test is positive, then this is the proper time to choose your family physician or obstetrician and start your follow up visits.

Pregnancy Week 5

If you have regular menses, then this is the usual time you will be expecting your menstrual blood flow to start. What really happens during this week is that Most pregnant women start thinking that their periods are somewhat late and will look for a pregnancy test. A pregnancy test detects a hormone that is secreted by your growing baby called Human Chorionic Gonatropin (HCG). This hormone will stimulate more secretion of estrogen and progesterone which is responsible for a lot of the early symptoms of pregnancy. This is the right time to call your physician office for an appointment, during which you will confirm your home pregnancy test with a more conclusive blood test.

During this week morning sickness is very common. There are a lot of things to do to overcome nausea such as using some salty snacks, cheese, nuts or even ginger. Some women use certain bracelets that might also help.

Tenderness in your belly and your breasts will continue. Your body is continuously adjusting to the new changes that are happening and all your organs will be working harder resulting in fatigue. Actually what is going inside your uterus is amazing and those few cells will develop rapidly into your new baby.

Development of the nervous system with its main components namely the brain and spinal cord starts during this week. The primitive heart and vascular system will also form.

Using prenatal vitamins as well as drinking water is very important. Folic acid and calcium supplements will ensure normal growth of your baby and folic acid specifically minimizes the occurrence of birth defects especially those affecting the nervous system

Your baby's heart will start beating and pumping blood to developing body parts. Your embryo is now looking exactly as a half moon. In the inside curve of this half moon, the body organs as well as the feeding umbilical cod are developing. Arms and legs are also budding like small mushrooms. Imagine the length of the embryo does not exceed few mm at this stage.

Your bathroom trips are still going on and many Mums will experience excessive salivation, gum swelling and eventually bleeding gums.
