Pregnancy Weeks 30 - 31

Pregnancy Week 30

During this week, as the center of gravity of your body alters, it is important that you maintain a good posture. Baby stops growing but its weight will increase to an average of 4 lbs in addition to his current weight during the last few weeks. You will be able to tell if a certain movement is made by the hand or the foot. You may not be able to bend over easily and will feel less comfortable by this time.

As the baby’s brain grows, head also gets bigger to accommodate it. Baby can now follow with his eyes any source of light and will be able to tell between light and dark outside the mother's uterus. Amniotic fluid amounts to few milliliters now. Toenails have almost completed their growth now. Fine hair or lanugo starts disappearing. Red blood cells are now produced by the bone marrow. Baby now has the ability to cry.

Baby’s measurements: 15.6 in. or 39.9 cm, weight = 1318g or 3 lbs.

Pregnancy Week 31

Feeling breathless after a walk or vigorous activity? Be assured that it won’t harm your baby. The right amount of oxygen will still be received by baby through the placenta. You may feel like waddling as your ligaments around your pelvis loosen up to prepare for childbirth.

Your doctor will let you know how many contractions per hour should be there in order for you to seek medical help. Some may ask you rush to the hospital when you start experiencing 6 contractions within an hour. Once the mucus plug which protects the cervix against infection is lost, there is a great chance that you will experience labor soon. But, with some women who are about to give birth, it happens even 2 weeks before the estimated birth date. When water breaks, it is also a sign that you’re ready to give birth. But sometimes, it is difficult to detect this also as it involves just a small trickle of amniotic fluid. Also, there is much vaginal discharge this time which can be confused as a water leakage. Don’t worry if you make trips to the hospital even before due time. It is better to be cautious.

Decide on the kind of medications you like. Majority of women who deliver in hospitals prefer epidurals as documented by the American Pregnancy Association.

Birthing partners or fathers may need to be ready with a route to the hospital. They should check for available gas in the car and be ready with the car keys. Taking time off from their jobs and spending time with the new member of the family is important as well as taking care of the mother.

The baby continues to gain weight but stops growing. Fat accumulates further and the bones harden as they grow. The skin changes to a pinkish shade while the lungs are done with developing. The brain continues to grow. The baby can even move to the beat of some music now!

Baby measurements: 16.2 inches or 41.2 cm, weight = 3.3 lbs or 1500 g
