Miscarriage

Most women refrain from sharing the happy news of their pregnancy amongst their friends and family during the first trimester, plainly because of the fear of miscarriage. They wish to feel secure and safe that their pregnancy is stable before they start experiencing and sharing the joy. For most of the women, almost 90% of them have a safe pregnancy. However, it is essential to understand the possible causes of miscarriage though it is believed that not all of them are related to the problem. Many such problems include:

  1. A history of trouble with IUD: An infection triggered by the IUD, thereby leading to the scarring of the uterus lining could be the probable cause of preventing pregnancy from setting in the uterus. However, once the implantation is well done, it does not lead you to miscarriage. It has also been established that a history of trouble holding IUD in place also does not lead to miscarriage.
  2. A case of multiple abortions:  A lot of times, multiple abortions lead you to the scarring of the endometrium. However, similar to the IUD caused infections, even this could case troubles in implantation but once done, it can hardly lead one to miscarriage.
  3. Minor injuries can never lead to miscarriage. However, it is essential to protect mothers from major injuries. Simple precautions like tying a seat belt, avoiding climbing on rickety chairs and tables must be observed strictly.
  4. Normal exercising regime, house work, lifting children, grocery bags or other moderate weights besides doing tasks like hanging curtains and moving around light house furniture is also a safe thing to do.
  5. Sexual intercourse is also a normal thing to do during pregnancy and does not lead one to miscarriage except if one has a strong history of pregnancy loss.
  6. Emotional stress caused by pressures from family and work is also accounted for cause for the miscarriage.

Several other factors however can lead to the increase in the risk of spontaneous abortion, though these will gradually go away and not be prevalent in future pregnancies. Examples of such factors could be drugs harmful to the fetus, rubella, other teratogenic diseases, high fever, IUD in place of conceptions, etc. Other such harmful factors such as mal nutrition, smoking, drinking, hormonal insufficiency or other maternal problems can be detected and addressed to get them eliminated in future pregnancies. Though many of these factors can be eliminated, not all of them can be. For example, a malformed uterus or other chronic illness related to a mother. It also sometimes happen that mother’s immune cells attack cells of her own embryo. It is recommended to undergo an immune therapy under such occasions.

However, one need not get into a compulsive worried pattern. Not necessarily, every cramp, headache or a spotting is a sign of the to-be miscarriage. Each woman faces through such issues and symptoms at one or the other time of her pregnancy. During pregnancy the ligaments that support the uterus get stretched and hence they cause aches, cramps and pulling sensation on either sides of the abdomen. These symptoms need not make you worried unless the symptoms are extreme and accompanied by bleeding. It will also lead to a little bit of staining. This happens seven to ten days after conception and is primarily due to the cells that are going to transform into your baby getting attached to the uterine wall. Most people panic when they see slight bleeding during this time, but rest assured these are normal symptoms and do not indicate any issues with your pregnancy. However, one must not ignore these symptoms if it is accompanied by pain in the lower abdomen.

An upcoming miscarriage will surely show you either of these signals:

  1. Central part of your lower abdomen experiences pain or cramps accompanied by bleeding. This could be due to the ectopic pregnancy and is an early sign to consult a doctor.
  2. When the above mentioned pain becomes extreme and goes on for more than a day. Such symptoms accompanied with or without bleeding can also be dangerous.
  3. Sometimes bleeding continues for three or more days and is as heavy as a menstrual cycle. This in itself is a symptom.
  4. Experiencing cramps or pain when you have a history of miscarriage could be a deadly symptom.
  5. Extreme cases of bleeding wherein you end up using more than a couple of pads in an hour accompanied by an unbearable pain is also a strong signal.
  6. The initiation of a miscarriage is signaled when you pass clots or pink/ grey material.

There could be instances when you experience such symptoms and may not be able to reach your doctor on call. The best advice on such occasion would be to go visit your nearest emergency room or the one recommended by your doctor’s office. Consult your doctor during such occasions as he might want you to store the contents that you pass in a jar so as to help him examine the status of your miscarriage. It will help him determine its status as complete, incomplete or simply threatening for the future. In cases of incomplete status, it might be required of you to undergo dilation and curettage to complete it.

It is always advisable to either lie down on your back or rest in a chair with your feet up if you are awaiting help. Surely, this won’t prevent miscarriage but it will definitely help you to relax a bit. A bit of information that can further help you relax is the fact that many women who witness such episodes of bleeding during early pregnancy recover and end up delivering healthy babies.

Most women cannot overlook the signs of termination once the pregnancy is established. However, a feeling of just not feeling pregnant is uncalled for and usually not a reason for concern. Fetal movement that happens much later during pregnancy makes one feel pregnant. Many pregnant women end up not feeling pregnant unless they reach this stage. Just visit your practitioner and he or she will reassure you of your and your baby’s well being.

However, there are also instances wherein the embryo dies and your body takes a while to expel it out. In such instances, one can notice diminishing or vanishing signs of pregnancy and all you could see is a brownish discharge. Immediately consult your doctor under such circumstances.
