Mammogram Screening

A mammogram screening is a test conducted in order to diagnose breast cancer. A lot of women are reluctant to do this just because they are afraid of getting a positive diagnosis. So, they generally tend to ignore the importance of the test and avoid it altogether. But is this the right way to approach mammogram?

In reality, mammography is a test which is very helpful to identify the symptoms of early breast cancer. This is a very important thing. Remember, the earlier we are aware of the situation we are in, the more effectively and successfully we can prevent the developing and spreading of the cancer cells to other parts of our body. But sadly, most of the women fail to understand this fact and they get tensed seeing statistics related to breast cancer. Of course, these statistics are really frightening as many women with breast cancer die every year.

But an important thing to be noted is that, the cases in which breast cancer was diagnosed early enough through a mammogram the survival rate is as high as 98%.  The remaining 2 % of patients have to face death as the disease got severe and was spread to other organs.

Another thing worth mentioning is that because mammogram was used intensively during the year 1990, the death rate from breast cancer has fallen as much as by 30% in the U.S. alone.

Often what makes women afraid of the mammogram procedure is the fear of discovering something unusual inside their breast and the statistics of this disease. In addition to these, some women also fear the radiation aspect. But this is not completely true. In mammogram a very little amount of radiation is used as breasts are composed of very soft tissues. This is even lower than the amount of radiation used in a bone check. The bones require a higher amount of radiation as they are thick and dense as compared to the breast tissues.

If you are concerned about the amount of radiation you will be exposed to in a mammogram, just be aware of the fact that their hand absorbs over 60% of the radiation emitted by their cell phone while in a call. So its better to do the test and be safe rather than finding out excuses for not to conduct a mammogram.

Also women find the mammogram device a bit unfriendly and are usually afraid of it. In this deice breast is kept between two panels and reveal the concerned data to a central computer. But there is nothing to worry about as the pressing is mild and the patient does not produce any ache. But, in some cases, in which the breast is already painful, the mammography can produce pain.

Often, women fear about a possible positive outcome of the result. This is especially true if you are recommended to do additional checkups. But in most of the cases mammography gives good results and never fails to detect something unusual inside the breast. But about 7% of women called back stand to get a false positive result. Also a greater percentage will found to have breast lump or benign which is non cancerous.

In order to identify the false negative results of a mammography can be found out either while going through an annual check-up or by an additional mammography itself.

If you are in the age group 35-60 be sure to do the mammogram every 6 months compulsorily because this is the age when you are more likely succumb to breast cancer.

Another advantage of doing periodical mammogram is that as the tumor is very small and in the developing stage it can be detected easily.
